That's Not All That Matters.

My Dad really taught me something important this week.

We were talking about my education.
I was really worrying about my future and whether I will graduate college or not.
My Dad never graduated college or received a degree,
But my Dad is one of the smartest people I know.
He has worked very hard to get where he is now and he is in a great place.
The business world has changed a lot though.
Now, without a college degree it is almost impossible to get a good job.
It really stresses me that I will never reach the point of graduating college.
I told him I feel like I am wasting my time taking classes that I don't want to take but,
I have to because they pertain to my major; Photography.
I haven't even been able to take a photography class because I have to take art prerequisites first.
But then he told me this,
Sometimes what you learn in school isn't about the academics.
Sure, that is very important but you are learning way more than you know.

You are learning how to live with other people different from you.
You are building meaningful relationships.
How to take care of yourself, meaning no Mom or Dad around to tell you what to do.
How to manage time and money.
How to work and deal with different peoples personalities.
Prioritizing your to-do list.
Being your own motivator.
Adapting to a new environment, on your own, a whole new place.
Cooking and eating right.
And just being responsible,
The things you couldn't learn by just sitting around at home,
doing nothing with your life.

I really don't think my Dad knows that he taught me all of this but I appreciate it.
My Dad has always been there to tell me everything will be okay, and you know what?
It is.

Dad, I wish you would come to Idaho on business and visit me soon.
